‘I believe we can all change the world through little steps and Fairtrade can engage the whole community in this.’
— Helen Robinson, businesswoman and campaigner, Holme Valley Fairtrade group
Helen and Holme Valley are a shining example of how communities can bring about change. And they aren’t alone – campaigner groups across the country showed tireless support for Fairtrade.
Many joined together for regional, national and international conferences, an opportunity to share experiences and learn from each other.
Fairtrade Fortnight 2016 saw campaigners and supporters sit down for breakfast and stand up for the farmers and workers who grow our food, yet often don’t earn enough to feed themselves or their families. During Fairtrade Fortnight, more than 53,000 people took an online pledge to eat a Fairtrade breakfast. Supporters organised thousands of community events and the campaign was featured across the media. Meanwhile, 91 percent of schools with Fairtrade Awards held or attended an event and around one million students took part in an assembly.
We built relationships with the Geographical Association to tie our work into the geography curriculum in schools. We relaunched our Fairtrade Schools website and awards, and created a series of films for young people about how climate change is affecting tea farmers.
Our online supporters grew to over 125,000 individual email subscribers in 2015, an increase of nearly 33 percent on the previous year. Meanwhile, our online, print and broadcast coverage provided an estimated 25.8 billion opportunities for people to learn more about Fairtrade.
Hardworking campaigning and school groups, our digital supporters and media mentions have all contributed to booming awareness of Fairtrade. Our research last year showed that 93 percent of consumers have seen the FAIRTRADE Mark, and 83 percent of those who recognise the Mark trust it.
